Directions to the Race Site

From the South: follow Highway 101 north (4 1/2 hours from San Francisco) past Garberville to the Honeydew exit. Follow the signs towards Honeydew and cross over the Eel River on the Dyerville Bridge. Turn left onto the Mattole Road crossing underneath the freeway and go 7-1/2 miles to the Cuneo Creek Horse Camp just past the cemetery. This is a very twisty road through the tallest trees on earth.

From the North: follow Highway 101 about 40 miles south of Eureka to the Honeydew exit. For those not living on the coast the easiest approaches to US 101 will be Highway 20 from the south and either Highway 199 through southern Oregon or Highway 299 from Redding CA for those from the North. Maybe you looked on maps and saw Highway 36 just a little north of the ride site. Don't do it unless you are looking for a scenic alternate and are driving a sports car. Highway 199, 299, and 20 are all best driven in the daylight when you are fresh. 299 is the windiest with 4 passes to cross in the 142 miles of two lane road between Redding and the coast. Take your time enjoy the drive.

Ride Camp Information

Ride Camp: is on a beautiful old homestead site filled with fruit trees in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This spectacular horse camp has been the site of the Cuneo Creek Endurance Rides for over 25 years and a few Ride and Ties during that time as well. This is a relatively remote site with the nearest services about 40 minutes away in the small town of Garberville. There is plenty of people-water and horse-water at ride camp as well as a creek flowing along side. There is some shade and some sunny spots as well. About 30 steel corrals are available on a basis as yet to be determined by ride management. Bring your quarters as there are very nice coin operated hot showers available. A lovely dining area under an immense buckeye tree will provide the setting for the post race meal and awards ceremony. Extra meal tickets will be available for a modest fee.

The ride and tie courses will be a mixture of old roads and single track trails with a very small amount of currently used truck roads. There are several rocky stream crossings so horses should have some hoof protection. Pads are not necessary but shoes or a complete set of Easy Boots will get the completion you are looking for. There are big climbs, long downhill, and meandering flat stretches along the creeks. There can be morning fog as well as the possibility of afternoon temps in the 90's. Wildlife in camp can often include deer, turkeys, coyotes and bears.

The park is a gracious host to our events and only asks a few things. A few of these include:

1. Please do not tie your horses to trees in camp. There are hitching posts, steel pens and your trailers for that.
2. Dogs are allowed ONLY in camp. A dog out on the trail could jeopardize the event. Dogs in camp must be on a leash and under the control of the owner at all times. This seems pretty clear. No loose dogs......ever. Don't throw your dog in the trailer and ride off for two hours so while its howling and you are gone, the park ranger comes looking for me to find out which part of the rules I didn't understand.
